Indulgence Tops Health When Eating Out

Picking healthy foods when eating out is a priority for only a quarter of diners, while 60% say I want to eat what I want to eat or I want to indulge at restaurants. Those are among the findings of a new NPD Group survey of more than 5,000 US adults. The results echo another recent survey, by the International Food Information Coun-cil, in which 81% of consumers said they eat more healthfully at home than at restau-rants. When restaurant customers do try to eat smart, NPD reported, theyre most likely to do so by simply skipping dessert (38%), beverages (37%) or appetizers (22%). Only a few try sharing an entre (12%) or ordering dressings and sauces on the side (16%).
