High-Fructose Corn Syrup Makers Seek a Name Change

Would high-fructose corn syrup by any other name taste as sweet? Tired of what it sees as a bum rap for the sweet-ener, the Corn Refiners Association has petitioned the US Food and Drug Admin-istration (FDA) to allow ingredient labels to list high-fructose corn syrup instead as corn sugar. The trade association argues that corn sugar more accurately cap-tures what the sweetener really is: sugar made from corn, much as beet sugar or cane sugar reflect those products origins. Consumers are confused, the association adds, by the term fructose in the current name. High-fructose corn syrup actually doesnt contain much more fructose than ordinary sugar (sucrose) does; both combine fructose plus another sugar, glucose. The FDA may take as long as two years to rule on the request.
