Q. I take 50 milligrams of zinc daily, but it looks like you should take only 40 milligrams per day. Is it OK to continue? What are the consequences of too much zinc?

A. Junaidah B. Barnett, PhD, a scientist in Tufts’ HNRCA Nutritional Immunology Laboratory who has studied zinc, replies: “The Upper Limit (UL) of the essential mineral zinc intake for adults is 40 milligrams per day. This includes intake from dietary, fortified and supplementary sources. We should get most of our nutrients from food. Good food sources of zinc include seafoods (such as oysters and crabs), beef and poultry. Good plant sources of zinc such as whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds add valuable fiber, protective antioxidants and phytonutrients, among many other benefits, to the diet. Those plant foods, however, contain phytate, which binds minerals such as zinc to form complexes that are not completely broken down during digestion, decreasing their bioavailability.

“It is important to note that phytate compounds found in rich plant sources of zinc have been shown to have antioxidant properties that offer protection against cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Limiting the intake of animal sources of zinc, on the other hand, is likely a good move towards a more healthful lifestyle. This is because animal-based foods high in saturated fat and cholesterol have been associated with increased risk of various chronic diseases.

“To ensure adequate intake of zinc (8 milligrams for women and 11 milligrams for men), be sure to consume foods rich in zinc daily. If you are already consuming a diet high in zinc and meeting your dietary requirements, it is not advisable to take additional zinc in the form of supplements. With high intake of zinc through food sources, there is no need to be concerned about overconsumption, as the body will compensate accordingly. Overconsumption of zinc usually occurs when supplements are consumed rather than using foods.

“High zinc intakes (150-450 milligrams per day) have been reported to inhibit copper absorption, sometimes resulting in copper deficiency, associated anemia, reduced immune function, and reduced levels of high-density or ‘good’ cholesterol. Intake of 80 milligrams per day of zinc in the form of zinc oxide for an average of 6.3 years in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) has been associated with a significant increase in hospitalizations for genitourinary issues. Even moderately high intakes of zinc of about 60 milligrams per day for up to 10 weeks have been reported to reduce a copper-containing enzyme (a marker of copper status). Zinc supplements also have the potential to interact with several types of medications (such as antibiotics and diuretics). As such, be sure to discuss your zinc intake with your healthcare provider.”

    • A good regimen is 22mg. of Zinc, and 2mg of Copper, taken 12 hours apart. These supplements should be taken with meals (One with Breakfast, the other with Dinner) and a full glass of water.

      • I stopped taking the Zinc. Glad someone is saying to eat with meals and a full glass of water. I would take the 50 mg Zinc and noticed i was having a slight headache if I did not eat a meal when taking it. I want to find a lower dosage.

    • Just love when people give non-answers to questions.

Perhaps the better question is; if 40mg of zinc is the maximum dosage, why do all the supplements come in 50mg tablets?

I have been trying to find out the answer to this question as well.

      • I took the 50mg tablet too! Thinking I was doing a good thing for my immune system and Covid and threw up lunch within 15 min the fifth day of taking it, I was also slightly nauseous after taking a 50mg dose prior days but shrugged it off. so I went online and found out you’re only supposed to have 11 mg a day no more than 40mg highest, why do they sell a 50 mg pill I figured it was a daily dose! but don’t worry before you die of overdose you will know somethings wrong bcs you’ll be vomiting whatever you eat way before the fatal symptoms set in & you’ll know somethings wrong with the pill you just took! Wonder how many other people had to find out the hard way! Pharmacies need to fix this for sure!

        • I also took 50 mg of zinc when I had Covid… I was so sick thinking it was Covid now I think it was the zinc.. nauseous , stomach pains, dry heaving , and throwing up…I was a mess . I agree if the maximum is 40 why the heck do they make 50 mg tablet

          • The 40mg upper limit is for elemental zinc. You would have to take 220mg of zinc sulfate to get 50mg of elemental zinc so knowing what form you take is important.

          • I’m guessing that one’s weight ought to factor in on what is the maximum dosage. I’m 6’1″ and 195 pounds. Should my 140 pound wife have the same maximum dosage as me?

My doc says that recommended or maximum dosages are averages and that weight does play a factor. Does it make sense to give an 81mg aspirin to a 150 pound person and also a 300 pound person?

        • I have taken 50mg per day for around 10 years now with absolutely no issues. I have never heard of a reaction like yours. And yes I am monitored by my physician.

          • I agree with you, I’ve been taking 50 mg which was the recommended dose when Covid started and I have had no issues or side effects at all and it never affected my blood pressure as some have warned me about.

        • The 40 mg refers to Elemental Zinc. In a 50mg capsule of zinc gluconate, you only are getting about 7mg of Elemental zinc. The proper question is: How many mg of Elemental Zinc are included in my 50mg supplement of zinc “fill in type”

        • This was on Stay Well Pharmacy website New Zealand —
Our body needs Zinc to survive, so it’s important to maintain good levels to stay healthy. Each Sandserson Triple Zinc FX tablet contains 32.25mg of Zinc Orotate, 35mg of Zinc Gluconate and 17mg of Zinc Citrate for an overall total amount of 84.25mg.

On the surface, that might seem like a lot of Zinc until you look at the elemental levels. Of the 32.25mg of Zinc Orotate, only 5mg is zinc elemental. Same for the Zinc Gluconate and Zinc Citrate. While you’re swallowing 84.25mg of zinc compounds in each tablet, you are only providing your body with a maximum of 15mg of elemental zinc. So, some minerals are more efficient than others. If we compare the three types of zinc in the Sanderson Triple Zinc FX pill you’ll see Zinc Citrate is more potent than Zinc Orotate. You can absorb 5mg of zinc elemental from 17mg of Zinc Citrate compared to 32.25 of Zinc Orotate. The zinc that does not get absorbed goes into your body’s waste disposal system.
I have not found a triple zinc in the United States so far – NZ does not have prices for this zinc. Maybe I will just eat more real food to get my zinc. 🙂

        • I just took the 50mg today and I instantly feel nauseous and was sweating like crazy. I thought it was just my hot chocolate (which I drink 3-4x a week without a problem). Now I know it was the zinc.

          • I took the same and I have non-side effects. You might eat something wrong and you think is the zinc pill 😀

        • It’s 40 mg of elemental zinc you need & to find out how much elemental zinc is in your capsule. From what I understand 50mg zinc can I actually only have 2% to 20% of elemental depending on the type. I think so you need to dig deeper not just the milligrams you need to find out the elemental milligrams per medcram doctor on YouTube

        • Got a bottle of 50 mg zinc pills? And you know the safest mg is below 40mg? Don’t throw the batch out. Buy from a drugstore a pill cutter, and cleanly cut the 50mg- into two 25mg pills, and then take.

        • Me too. I learned the hard way. Popping 30mg of zinc on empty stomach caused me bad diarrhea, vomiting, fatiguand fainting spells. I am still weak in my legs and can barely stand w/o feeling like I’m about to fall. Learned my lesson. And also prior to taking 30mg, I was drinking vit. Water w/zinc and Emergency C every day for a week along with eating okra and beef 4days. Seems small amount but enough to cause a trip to the ER and a week off from work.

      • It seems that the absorption rate of zinc gluconate, one of the most popular forms, is about 60%. So a 50mg tablet would give you around 30mg actual zinc intake.

        • You seem to be the only that stated the correct answer. The absorption rate is about eighty percent, therefore they often over compensate for that.

          • The Zinc market along with almost all mineral’s like Magnesium and Calcium, are a disaster. Some take the time to do the math of not only “elemental” into their fact sheet, but also the bio-availability. Both are massively important. For instance you often find 220mg of “Zinc Gluconate” but the actual Zinc elemental which is what the RDA is ALWAYS referring to is only 50mg and then to make matters worse by selling it as 220mg and not saying 50mg they don’t factor in the bio-availability of that 50mg of Zinc Gluconate elemental which is only 60% leading you to 21mg which is twice the RDA and what you’d take to boost deficiency or when you’re trying to heal from an ailment. You can take such doses in the 20mg elemental RDA for long periods of time but really once you hit 30-40mg or even higher for some people there are reasons for going higher, it should be in short stints and taking some elemental booster that Zinc is linked to to offset any deficiency issues. In those instances the length you can take Zinc for prolonged periods is undefined if taking elemental boosters but I’d say its still not wise given your body is good at managing almost everything that goes 50-100% above RDA over time so long as the bodies working properly.

This goes for all Zinc products. Magnesium has gotten a lot better but Zinc is really all over the place. Just really take the time to do the math and find out both the elemental for any mineral you purchase AND it’s bio-availability which will give you the final number of what it actually is you’re taking. To make matters worse there are a few companies selling Zinc that do that and they are so rare that it screws up people not realizing they are taking 50mg ACTUAL bio-availability and elemental taken into account.

      • I believe that the supplements are talking about zinc citrate or another form of zinc and the “max limit” is talking about the actual elemental zinc so the citrate may say its 50mg of zinc but the elemental amount is maybe 20 mg of zinc for example.

      • I found my 50mg zinc tablets were actually Zinc gluconate. The elemental zinc in zinc gluconate is 14.3% elemental zinc – so in a 50mg tablet Zinc gluconate tablet I’m really only getting 7.15 MG elemental zinc. I hope this helps.

      • Because none of the tablets actually have 50 mg of ELEMENTAL ZINC in them. Each type has a percentage of elemental zinc.
Zinc Orotate for example, has only 13% elemental zinc so you would get 6.5 mg of elemental zinc by taking a 50 mg tablet.
Zinc Picolinate has 20% so a 50 mg tablet would give you 10 mg of elemental zinc.

        And so it goes.

Zinc citrate is approximately 34% zinc by weight. For a dose of 50mg elemental zinc, take 146 mg zinc citrate.
Zinc sulfate consists 23% of elemental zinc; thus, 220 mg of zinc sulfate contains 50 mg of elemental zinc (NIH).
Zinc gluconate is approximately 13% zinc by weight. For a dose of 50mg elemental zinc, take 385 mg zinc gluconate.
Zinc monomethionine is approximately 21% zinc by weight. For a dose of 50mg elemental zinc, take 238 mg zinc monomethionine. (Examine)
Zinc picolinate (20% of elemental zinc) (Metabolics)
        Zinc ascorbate (15%) (Metabolics)
        Zinc chloride (48%) (Metabolics)
        Zinc carbonate (52%) (Metabolics)
        Zinc bisglycinate (25%) (Metabolics)
Zinc oxide (80%) (FamilyPractice). Although the percentage of elemental zinc is high, do take note that zinc oxide is one of the least bioavailable form.
Zinc carnosine: The typical clinical oral dose is 150 mg/day, containing 34 mg zinc and 116 mg L-carnosine.
Zinc aspartate is approximately 20% zinc by weight. For a dose of 10 mg elemental zinc, you need 50 mg of zinc aspartate.
Zinc methionine is approximately 23% elemental zinc by weight.

        • Thank you so much! I was having a devil of a time trying to get this info and you laid it all out here for all zinc forms. Super helpful. You also helped me understand that % of elemental zinc in each form does not speak to its bioavailability. May I ask how you came to these figures? I’d like to share but would have to verify first. Thank you so much.

    • My zinc bottle says Zinc (Zinc Gluconate) 50mg. As I understand it, this contains 14.3% zinc which is 7.15mg. Is Julio taking 50mg of Zinc or some other form (such as Zinc Gluconate) which may have much less zinc per 50mg?

  1. The UL for zinc is 40 mg daily for all males and females ages 19+ years.
Excess zinc can interfere with the absorption of iron and copper.

  2. I just today took a supplement pill of 50miligram of zinc from my local grocery store…I saw a Dr on FB today recommend it for the help of warding off covid 19 I took it with a big glass of schwepps tonic water for the quinne in it… Should I continue tomorrow with the zinc pill ? The Dr on FB said yes I hope I didn’t do anything stupid…I took it 2 hours ago I feel fine ate also some pasta.

Hope you can respond to my question.

    • Hey Joseph,
Don’t take 50 mg of zinc per day unless your doctor tells you to.
The upper limit per day is 40 mg. Excess zinc can interfere with the absorption of copper and iron.

Many viral infectious diseases have been cured and can continue to be cured by the proper administration of vitamin C.

      • Dr. Jamal Salem, I’ve been taking 30 mg Zinc picolinate (Paradise Earth’s Blend Zinc that includes traces of lots of supportive ingredients) + Quercetin. According to comments above, the picolinate yields 20% elemental, bringing it to only 6mg of elemental zinc, which is below the RDA.

Would you be able to confirm that picolinate does only yield 20% elemental zinc, and to clear up my confusion as to whether I should be taking a higher elemental dose than 6mg/day? I do have chronic wounds and also want to protect from viral infection.

I take ascorbic acid every day, along with 4000IU D3 (+100mcg K2) as was recommended by Dr. Michael Cohen in his interview with Dr. John Campbell, to meet the goal of getting serum levels of D3 up to the optimum protective level of 50 ng/ml shown to significantly, positively affect the medical outcome in hospitalized covid patients and to reduce the risk that an infection would lead to that severity in the first place to possibly zero.

  3. I’m confused about the information regarding the upper limit of zinc. Zinc supplements are usually chelates, or elemental zinc that has been reacted with another substance to create a zinc salt. Articles I’m reading about zinc seem to infer that a “50mg zinc supplement” is 50mg of zinc and already 10mg over the Upper Limit, but a zinc salt like Zinc Picolinate is only 20% elemental zinc; 50mg of Zinc Picolinate is only about 10mg of actual zinc, which is only 1/4th of the Upper Limit. When calculating overall zinc intake, shouldn’t we be considering the amount of “elemental zinc” to know how close we are to the upper limit? I’m assuming when we look at the reported zinc content in food, it’s accounting for the presence of elemental zinc, so why would supplements be any different?

    • —PS, For example, in this article, it says “80 milligrams per day of zinc in the form of zinc oxide for an average of 6.3 years [caused problems].” Does this mean 80mg of Zinc Oxide? Zinc Oxide is about 80% elemental zinc, so 80mg of Zinc Oxide is about 64mg of elemental zinc (which is still over the UL). Or does it mean 80mg of zinc “by means of zinc oxide,” which would actually require a dose of 100mg of Zinc Oxide? I’m guessing it’s the former example, but I wish they would specify because it creates confusion around the topic of zinc intake. Due to Coronavirus, I’m seeing people recommend 100-250mg of a zinc supplement without any mention of the form/chelate, and each form is going to have very different amounts of actual, elemental zinc…

  4. I just bought zinc picolinate 50mg capsules For me, my husband, 18 yr old son and 13 yr old daughter. Now I am completely confused if this is too much or not.

Does the maximum 40mg of zinc mean “elemental zinc” (whatever that means), and if so, is that a different zinc or different zinc measurement than “Zinc picolinate 50mg”- The commenter above (Aidan) raises exactly the confusion I am having.

I also want to send to my mom who has lung cancer, emphysema & asthma during this covid isolation. She is 88 and doesn’t eat a lot so I was thinking zinc supplements could help.

    • Hey Debby,

To get the most benefits, it’s important to take this mineral along with copper.
Zinc Picolinate does not have any known side effects associated with taking normal does.
15 mg is considered a preventive dosage while higher dosage upto 30 mg a day may be needed to correct a deficiency. Excess zinc can interfere with absorption of copper and iron. Please note that the ratio of zinc to copper is clinically more important than the concentration of either these trace metals. As long term use of oral contraceptives may reduce zinc levels, Large amounts of supplemental iron greater than 25 mg might decrease zinc absorption, chronic diarrhoea leads to excessive loss of zinc…
feel free to talk to me over WhatsApp if needed.

  5. High levels of zinc and low levels of copper may increase the risk of copper deficiency. A strong relationship exists between zinc and copper, too much of one can cause a deficiency in the other.

You should not take high doses of zinc for more than a few days unless your doctor tells you to, talk to your doctor before taking more than 40 mg of zinc per day and take breaks from zinc supplementation. During those breaks, get zinc from a well-balanced diet. Your body doesn’t need a large amount of zinc. The recommended daily allowance for adults is 8 – 11 mg.

    • Can I take zinc Acetate 50 mg daily for one month then give a gap/ break of 15 days then again continue.
I have befitted from this dose to reduce my cold n cough to large extent.
Also want to know my wife has auto immune disease Rheumatoid Arthritis n also thyroid problem. Can she take this zinc tablet.
      Thanking you
      Samir Mistry

  6. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that the most simple solution for an overly high dose of zinc is to also supplement it with copper. If you move your right foot, eventually you should move your left foot too. Pretty easy isn’t it?

    • That’s not how it works. An excessive zinc intake INHIBITS the bioavailability of copper. So you can’t counter the copper defeciency by taking more copper.
These comments from such ignorant people, such as yourself, should never make it on the internet.
Educate yourself before making such harmful statements. You aren’t as smart as you think you are.

    • not really. Just because you take zinc doesn’t mean you should take copper. If someone is eating a well rounded diet they are most likely getting enough copper so by adding additional zinc or copper you can actually alter the biochemical reactions in your body and cause more harm than goo.

  7. lmaooooo . what HE said. i take 50 mg of zinc and i take 4 mg of copper as well. Not at the same time. I take zinc in the AM and copper in the PM. I did the research . And put 2 and 2 together. I also added 25 mg of Iron which I take with the copper. We can cure ourselves if we do the research and follow the signs. SInce taking Zinc & Copper. I FEEL amazing. I passed the good news to my son but recommended that he start with 15 mg per day and 2 mg of copper. We have been bamboozled by modern medicine. They want us to not take the right doses so we can either stay sick or get sick. There is nothing wrong with 50 mg of Zinc as long as you add copper in the mix.

  8. I just started taking zinc and about an hour after I take a pill (50 mg), I feel nauseated for about 15-30 minutes. Is that a sign I need to reduce my dose?

    • Yes, you should reduce your dose. The limit is 40mg/day, but that’s a therapeutic dose. Over 20mg/day, zinc is known to suppress the immune system instead of boosting it… I would suggest to research the effect/function of the substances you plan to take on credible sites, before taking them.

    • Eat it with food. This is important!!! I take 50 mg zinc everyday, but I cannot take without food or I will get extremely nauseous.

  9. The daily UL of zinc is 40mg ELEMENTAL. Zinc comes in many salts, zinc sulfate, zinc gluconate, zinc picolinate, etc… These are different salt forms as most drugs you ingest are salts as they are easier to absorb as salts from the GI tract. Look at the label and see if it has the elemental amount of zinc per tablet. some labels will have this info, some not.. Zinc gluconate 50mg=7mg of elemental zinc, so no its fine to take more than one tablet a day. I’m a pharmacist so I would know these things. As always, consult with your doctor as they know your medical history.

  10. My husband took 50 mg Zinc per day for about 2-3 months (concern for preventing Covid ). He developed myelitis, Wobbly gait and tingling hands. He had MRI and numerous lab tests. Could that amount of Zinc have caused a copper deficiency?

  11. Oysters were mentioned as a good source of Zinc. Too much zinc depletes copper in some way, but the good news is that oysters ALSO contain a fair amount of copper. Once ounce of canned oysters contain:

    Zinc 25.5mg 170%
    Copper 1.2mg 62%

    Comments?

  12. Look people do your own research! There giving you a suggestion please read other information and make an informed decision. Zinc comes naturally in some foods. Zinc helps bolster the immune system however to much zinc you can experience flu like symptoms. and long term high dose use is much more serious. Will a child need an adult dose it’s doubtful. Please just do your own research educate yourself on Vitamins, Minerals its very interesting. Best Wishes

  13. So I’m the only crazy person here taking 250mg zinc tablet daily . Omg . The bottle reads take one tablet daily ..so well…my hormonal acne has improved

    • Alice- Omg!! 250mg of Zinc cannot be good for you!!! I mean I’m glad to hear your hormonal acne has improved, but you may be harming yourself, with major copper & iron deficiency. I’m not sure how long you have been taking that high dosage, but I would strongly suggest that you call your doctor, to make sure it’s not interfering with any other medications you may be on. As well as getting a blood work-up, to see how all other levels look. Just my 2cents of course..Be welll 😉

  14. When trying to find. a zinc supplement the only one’s I see are 50mg. I have not seen any less then that. Why is that when you Dr’s say women should only take around 8 mg?

  15. I just looked at the label of my zinc and it says each tablet contains
Elemental Zinc ( Gluconate) 50 mg. So how can 50mg gluconate = 7mg elemental Zinc when my label says it’s both. I am trying to do my homework. Where else should I be looking for proper info?

  16. CDK. stage 4a diagnosed
How early should l consultant a dietitian who could work with a nephrologist to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease?
    In general:
    What percentage of protein?
What types of food to eat or avoid?
    What else?

  17. I bought gnc 50 mg zinc which is zinc citrate. What kind of zinc is in your supplement? It says online zinc citrate of 50 mg only contains 31% of the trace mineral zinc. So that’s 15.5 mg of true zinc you are getting. So you are fine I believe. I currently take that zinc supplement with a zip fizz and a men’s multivitamin. That is 36 mg. Depending on what kind of zinc is in it.

    • I’m doing the same. Chop that zinc into smaller pieces. For me zinc is a binder. So, to keep regular,… I split a zinc50mg into thirds.

  18. My daughter takes Zinc Lozenges twice a day. It says 25 mg % zinc, 30 mg vitamin c and 2 mg vitamin B-6. Proprietary Blend. Should she continue to take 2 a day? She takes 1 in the morning and 1 after supper. Thank you

  19. Pure Encapsulations sells zinc supplements in 15 and 30 mg capsules. Available at Amazon. Also if you take a multivitamin, you are probably already getting 11-15 mg (check the label).

  20. I wonder if it would be safe to take 50mg few (2 or 3 X) times a week just to make sure you are getting enough. People who have lot of stress for long period of time will deplete their Zinc levels.

  21. I take Solaray Zinc Copper in the chelate form. It states on the bottle it has 50mg Zinc and 2mg Copper with 53mcg Iodine from Kelp and Pumpkin Seeds. I walked into my local vitamin shoppe store instead of purchasing it online because I wanted to be able to take it back if it didn’t agree with my stomach. So far I have not been experiencing any side effects. The amount you should take depends on the person’s needs. Everyone is different and will require different amounts. Therefore, seek medical advice for your specific needs instead of reading what the FDA states should be the recommended amount. Some people may only need a smaller dose and there are others that need a much HIGHER DOSE. There was a lady that actually needed 100mg which was actually recommended by her doctor. I take mines for hair loss and premature greying and have not been experiencing inflammation in my scalp as I use to, so far it has been what my body needed after all.

  22. OMG! I am taking zink (50mg) from about 10 days . Everyday I feel horrible, nauseous, diarrhea. Today it happened right after I had my lunch and vitamins so I thought that the only new thing is me taking zink. I am glad that I found this helpful information because otherwise I was going to continue taking it and wondering why am I so nauseous..

  23. I started taking 50 mg also. Very nausea and no vomiting. I also had stomach aches too. I recently cut down the mgs to 15-25.

  24. I had no noticeable issues with Zinc 50mg daily, but now after reading this, I’m going to use a pill splitter to halve the dose.

On the other hand, with Flush Niacin 500mg, which many others can tolerate easily, I felt very bad with this dose. (Whole body flushing, slight nausea, etc).

Usually I just focused on healthy diet, but with COVID I attempted to optimize my nutrition with supplements.

  25. Position unit activities are loved by casino goers of most ages and that is the key reason why the position machine business is one of the most successful firms in most casino industry. Position machine gambling has been popularized by the gradual casinos and their machines give you a great selection of fascinating games including pay-to-play and advantage game position machines. You can find a number of websites that offer total information about online casinos, newest jackpot amounts, quantity of position devices, the amount of machines per game space and other casino details. All this is provided for the ease and you are able to get your final decision following having a great go over all these information. Therefore, in the event that you too need to see the same enjoyment that you see people experiencing at these casinos then decide for online slot machines.

  26. I have researched several reputable sites about doses & over dosage. The best idea I came up with is buy the tablets use a pill cutter. Purchase at any Walmart pretty cheap. Split it 3ways in a 30mg or 40mg . I did find a Chelated Zinc came in a 30mg dose . Which processes more efficiently through absorption & digestion. Also ,fyi if you have a good varied diet you probably get more Zinc than you realize. Really only need a significant supplement if your sick or immediately after you start getting sick. Check your food sources chicken, cashews, eggs, oatmeal or fortified cereal, grass feed beef, lots of seafood, lamb, spinach…you will be surprised!

  27. Rita, yes, in my research, I’ve found that quercetin is an ionophore, which means it opens up your cells to let the zinc in. Then the zinc blocks viruses (and COVID) from getting in. Quercetin acts like hydroxychloroquine in that way. I take 500mg quercetin and 25mg elemental zinc every day.

  28. 50 mg of zinc citrate is the equivalent of 7mg of elemental zinc. It is adviced to take 40 mg of elemental zinc a day. That it’s the difference.

  29. People mistake the upper limit of zinc as being 40mg but that’s for elemental zinc. Zinc sulfate for example would need to come in a 200mg bottle for one to get above that upper limit. So if you’re bottle says 50mg zinc sulfate you are well below the upper limit of 40mg elemental zinc per day.

    • Thank you for your clear explanation.I would like to ask your opinion on , I take Zinc Picolinate 50 mg witch is 10 mg of Elemental Zinc , but I am confused on the label on the back that says :Supplemental Facts : Zinc ( from 270 mg Zinc Picolinate ) Amount per serving 50 mg .

    • I bought also Natures Bounty. I couldn’t find Natures Made 30MG. I’m confused, some of here saying 50MG is too much, others say 50MG is equivalent to 7 elemental zinc. If 50MG is too much ,why they letting it sale ,why no one is complaining to DFA . Is this business?

  30. its ok to take zinc supplementation over the upper tolerable limit especially if you are sick because the common supplements are not pure zinc there a combination so the 40mg limit is pure elemental zinc. here are pure zinc found in supplements
zinc sulfate (23% zinc), zinc acetate (30% zinc), or zinc gluconate (14% zinc)

  35. I was going to start taking and decided before I opened the bottle of 50 mg. I noticed who the manufacturer was and where the bottle came from and it literally said China. I will be taking that bottle back to the store and will try to find one that is manufactured in the USA with lower dosage as I already eat veggies such as spinach, kale, broccoli etc. that already have zinc. I have a question for the above have any of you lost weight taking zinc? I thank all of you for your input it was very educational and a little confusing at first.

  36. I have been taking 50mg of zinc every day for 6 months straight during Covid. After I got Covid. Only lost my taste and smell for 2 days.
I got sick during this last Christmas and started the zinc taking 50mg again. It’s helped me get better. It’s important to eat before you take it. Also take Elderberry, it helps.
