Obesity Rates Growing Again

Has the obesity epidemic finally plateaued? Fat chance, says a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on 2013-2014 national nutrition survey data. The percentage of adults and children defined as obese (BMI of 30 or more) was 35% in 2011-2012, a figure that had seemed to hold steady since 2003-2004. But the latest data showed a bulge to 38%, led by middle-aged adults (40.2%), adult women (38.3%) and black adults (48.1%). One glimmer of good news was that obesity among children and adolescents remained at 17%, suggesting the younger generation may be an exception to the trend.
