Q. I know fruit is considered very healthy, but I worry about the sugars in it. Should someone with diabetes or pre-diabetes consume fruit?

A. Anastassios G. Pittas, MD, professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at Tufts Medical Center, replies: Fruit is healthy as it contains fiber and many nutrients and people with pre-diabetes or diabetes should not avoid fruit. However, fruit does contain carbohydrates and needs to be considered in ones meal and caloric plan. It is important to note that fruit juice should not be substituted for the actual fruit.
