Q. It has been recommended to me that I include avocados in my diet. Since this is not something I care for, is there something else that could be used as a substitute source of these healthy unsaturated fats?

A. Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc, director of Tufts HNRCA Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory, answers: Avocados are rich in unsaturated fat, as you point out; so are many other foods. One cup of cubed avocados contains 7.3 grams of monounsaturated fat and 1.4 grams of polyunsaturated fat, with 120 calories. Choose those healthy foods you enjoy. There is rarely anything unique about one single food and certainly not a reason to eat something you do not enjoy.
