According to a report from the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development, the slow growth rate of pork will lead to it being overtaken by chicken, turkey and other poultry products by 2020. Poultry is expected to take over in almost every region and country, including both developed and developing nations. By 2023, poultry is projected to account for half of the additional overall meat consumption. In the US, beef and pork consumption are expected to stay flat or decline slightly, while poultry will more than make up for the combined trend.
The Washington Post reports that porks loss may be planet Earths gain, according to another new study, this one by the Environmental Working Group. The carbon footprint of chicken production is half that of pork for the same amount of meat, according to the EWG, one-fourth that of beef and one-seventh that of lamb. (Vegetarians, however, can take pride in the fact that lentils boasted the lowest production emissions per kilogram of consumed food in the study, less than one-seventh that of chicken.)
