Scrutinize Sandwich Choices

What’s in your sandwich? A new analysis of national nutrition survey data on more than 27,000 Americans suggests not paying attention to the nutrient facts on sandwiches could contribute to less-healthy eating. About 53% of participants ate a sandwich on any given day, most commonly consuming cold cuts, burgers or chicken. Although contributing a quarter of daily calories, sandwiches were responsible for a third of the fat (most of it saturated) and sodium. Compared to days when the same individuals didn’t eat a sandwich, choosing a sandwich meant consuming an extra 99 calories, 268 grams of sodium and 3 grams of sugar. When eating a sandwich, people also ate slightly less fruit and vegetables, according to results published in Public Health.
