Q: Does magnesium help the body absorb calcium from the diet?

Answer :Bess Dawson-Hughes, MD, director of Tufts HNRCA Bone Metabolism Laboratory, says, Im not aware of any evidence that magnesium facilitates calcium absorption. Rather, to make sure your body can utilize the calcium in the foods you consume, its important to get enough vitamin D, either from dietary sources or from supplements. Studies have shown that taking extra calcium without adequate vitamin D wont help protect your bones.
