Healthy Vegan Diet May Promote Weight Loss

0

Following a vegan diet may promote weight loss and reduce insulin resistance in overweight individuals. A recent 16-week randomized clinical trial, published in the journal Nutrients, examined the role of carbohydrate consumption on body composition and insulin resistance. Seventy-five overweight participants were randomized to either follow a vegan diet or maintain their current diet. Calorie intake was similar in both groups. The prescribed vegan diet was high in dietary fiber and total carbohydrate (from foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and beans) and low in fat. At the end of the trial, those who followed the vegan diet had a significant loss of body weight, lower BMI and fat mass, and improved insulin resistance. Based on this study, a vegan diet (that does not rely predominantly on refined, processed foods) may be one option for overweight individuals looking to lose weight and improve body composition.
