Ask Tufts Experts September 2011 Issue

Q: I’m confused by your article about the new American Heart Association statement on triglycerides (July). Does this mean medication is never called

Answer :  We checked with Neil J. Stone, MD, of the Feinberg School of Medicine, one of the authors of these recommendations. He clarifies: “For the small number of individuals with fasting triglycerides greater than 500 mg/dl, in addition to lifestyle changes pharmacologic therapy is reasonable, and very important for those who have already had hyperlipidemic pancreatitis.”
