Ask Tufts Experts August 2012 Issue

Q: Is there any difference in effectiveness between vitamin D supplements in soft gel versus pill form, or can I just buy whatever’s cheaper?

Answer :  Vitamin D expert Bess Dawson-Hughes, MD, director of Tufts’ HNRCA Bone Metabolism Laboratory, replies: “I know of no evidence that there is a difference in bioavailabiity between these two forms and have no reason to think there would be. As long as the preparations are US Pharmacopia grade, I would choose the cheaper one.”
