Ask Tufts Experts September 2011 Issue

Q: Do diet and exercise have the same benefit for someone who has led an active lifestyle and eaten a healthy diet for 30 years as for someone who just begins such a regimen? Or does the body become accustomed to such activity?

Answer :  The good news (unless you’re looking for an excuse to slack off exercising) is that exercise keeps benefiting the body at any level of health and fitness. Says Irwin H. Rosenberg, MD, editor of the Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter, “There is no plateau in benefit from exercise if maintained even after achieving a healthy lifestyle, though there may be some plateau in maximum oxygen capacity.”
