Ask Tufts Experts January 2011 Issue

Q: I've read about research associating high vitamin A intake with bone loss. Do I need to worry about the levels of vita- min A in multivitamins, since I’m at risk for osteoporosis?

Answer :  A Bess Dawson-Hughes, MD, director of Tufts’ HNRCA Bone Metabolism Laboratory, answers: “The amount of vitamin A in multivitamins is reasonable, but I would not take more supplemental vitamin A than that. Some recommend two multivitamins in order to boost your vitamin D intake (for bone health), but this is a bad idea. Similarly, some supplements advertised for their vitamin D content contain a lot of vitamin A and I would avoid these as well—you can tell by looking on the label.”
