Ask Tufts Experts September 2014 Issue

Q. Our daughter-in-law won’t give her children cow’s milk because she read a book where it says the acid in milk leaches calcium from your bones. Is there really any cause for concern about this?

A. Bess Dawson-Hughes, MD, director of Tufts’ HNRCA Bone Metabolism Laboratory, says, “There is no cause at all for concern. Milk is naturally pH neutral.” (That is, it is neither acid nor alkaline.)
